“How did I get here?”
I’ve said this many times. I’ve even said it after I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. I’ve changed my mind so many times that I realized I actually never got anything done. Until I started practicing these next things I’m about to tell you.
I'll get straight to the point. I want to share some wisdom God gave me that has faithfully worked every time I've needed a breakthrough.
Everything must start with gratitude. So, quiet yourself. Don’t think about the future or the past, but remain present. Begin to thank God for how He’s shown His goodness in your life, who He’s made you to be, and who He’s called you to be. There may be some other things to add to this prayer, but for now, just repeat these things.
Get a pen and a piece of paper (I recommend not using your phone for this). Ask yourself this question: When I die, what do I want said about me at my funeral? Ask God what that looks like. Write down as many things as you can.
When you’ve identified what you want said about you, you now have some indication that you want more out of life. Pray through those things that you've identified.
Write out those things in a list and start breaking down the details of what it takes to get there or to do those things.
After you make those lists, start incorporating some of those details into your daily routine and watch God bless the faithfulness of your heart to what He's called you to be.
I want you to understand that the goal here is not what other people have said about you, ultimately, the goal is to the identify who you want to be. You can live your life chained to what other people have said about you or even prophesied over what you should do or who you should be. Or you can partner with God in finding out the person you truly are and start living like you mean it.
I've seen many people let other people's words shut down their ability to dream. It's happened to me, too. You find yourself in this dangerous trap and have no idea know how to get out. But the truth is that you are a powerful person that gets to choose who you want to be. You have these massive dreams in your heart that God put there. There's healing for you in discovering what God says about you.
Saying questions like, “How did I get here?” or “Is this it?”, doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re lost. It can be an indicator that you’re ready for deeper things in life and that's a good place to be. But it’s very important to understand where you are at and identify where you want to be at if you want to start dreaming again.
Scripture says, “Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the LORD means safety.” Proverbs 29:25 NLT
Many people live their lives letting life happen to them. But what if you could start happening to life? Bringing God into the process of this discovery works every single time. His wisdom is much more sound than ours.
Even when you can’t see the beauty and the greatness the Father put inside of you when He made you, He still always sees the real you. Take some time today to embrace that truth.
